“Georgette Shapley died outside this house. Her ghost has spent the past century trying to get back inside so she can be reunited with her child.” James Spence doesn't believe in ghosts, so he has no worries about going with his girlfriend Rachel to visit an old, abandoned country home. Rachel, meanwhile, is convinced that a weekend at Shapley Hall will make James change his mind. After all, she knows from bitter experience that the the house is haunted by a woman who once died in the most horrific manner possible, and who now waits to be reunited with her long-lost child. As the weekend continues, however, James starts to realize that maybe ghosts are the least of his problems. Rachel's behavior is becoming increasingly erratic, and it soon becomes clear that she'll stop at nothing to fulfill a promise she once made to a dead woman. Did Rachel imagine a terrifying experience during her childhood, or are the hallways of Shapley Hall really haunted by a terrifying, vengeful creature? The Ghost of Shapley Hall is a horror novella about two people who venture into a dark, abandoned house, and about the echo of a terrible crime that still haunts the Shapley family to this day.

I love haunted houses, and October is my favorite month to read about them. The Ghost of Shapley Hall has a great premise and the story itself is fast paced and engaging. Right as the story begins to climax I found myself pausing while reading to say things like "Wait, when did that get lost?" , only to read back and find that it hadn't, or else saying " This isn't possible, why on earth would the character think this?" There were just too many faults and holes in the details. The ending was clever, but I still had the distaste from the recent errors in my mouth. I'd recommend this book as a fast careless, " I just need something scary but not vulgar to read" read.

The Ghost of Shapley Hall Amy Cross 9781521096543 Books Reviews

It was a good read but I found it to be a little slow. Also, the execution needs work. There were lots of grammatical errors, transposed words and letters. The author didn't make it scary enough. The ghosts didn't appear very often but I'm assuming the aim was for the way it ended. Even though I knew what the ending was going to be I enjoyed it. Yes, I would recommend it to anyone who likes a good ghostly book with not too much ghost in it and a twist at the end.
I could see it coming. Of course, someone who doesn't believe will believe...eventually. The rest of it, I didn't see coming. The ending surprised me. Not a big Aha kind of surprise but the kind of I didn't see that coming surprise. The book was worth the time spent to read it but it dragged in some places and the characters were a bit whiney at times. Overall, I would definitely recommend this book. It's worth a little whiney to finally get to the twisted ending.
It started out really slow & the "romance" stuff just felt really awkward and forced. I was glad when the author finally dropped it. It did get a little scary towards the end but I felt like the rest of the book just dragged on & on. It was pretty much nothing but "I don't believe in ghosts", "my girlfriend is going nuts", & James asking Rachel what's wrong & her starting to answer before tapering off & going off into her own little world & then saying "it's nothing" or "I'm fine". It was an okay read but the author could take a lesson or two from Stephen King. Also, she needs a proofreader. There were several typos & mixed sentences throughout the book.
Rachel talks her boyfriend of a couple of months to go to her family mansion for the weekend. She doesn't tell him it's haunted until they are there but James doesn't believe in ghosts so he's fine with it. Rachel's personality starts to change and she tells James that she is there to find the body of a baby that was killed and return it to it's mother who was also murdered a couple hundred of years ago.

Good story. It started out slow for me but I soon started turning pages. I'll look for more books by this author.
If I never hear the phrase “here’s the thing” again it’ll be too soon. Honestly how many times would an actual human say that phrase over two days? A lot apparently. I’ve read a lot of Amy across books. Or really I’ve read the exact same story told in slightly different ways. Here’s what I’ve come to expect from an Amy Cross book 1) someone will find bones in the mud. 2) someone will break or injure a leg (or have a heart attack at 23 in this case). 3)the same sentence or sentiment will be repeated over and over for no apparent reason other than to make the book longer. 4) no character ever will have even one likeable or redeemable quality. 5) no one can apparently finish a sentence. 6) no one will act even remotely like a normal human being would in any given situation.

Honestly I feel like Amy Cross is filling in a form letter when she writes books. The names and locations may be different but that’s about it. Not to mention the horrendous grammar, spelling, and continuity errors in every single thing she’s ever written. If they weren’t free I wouldn’t waste my time with this garbage. Amy, please get an editor and an original thought. And try to go out and meet some people in real life so you can write a character that has a personality.
Rachel waited many years to come back to the manor house to put the ghost to rest by finding her child and burying them together.
I didn't like this story. I found the characters irritating and the story was not scary. The author would have benefitted from a good editor, there were miscellaneous errors throughout the book that detracted from the story.
As for the story itself, there were holes in the logic. ****SPOILER**** I want to know how an 11 yo girl got the knowledge to trick the ghost into the basement and lock him in. If you read the story you would know that a century ago the old man used his knowledge to lock a ghost out of his house. This was probably the same information the girl used on the ghost. So how did it work on him? You would think he would know what she was doing. That is just one part that doesn't make sense to me.
Another part that didn't make sense was the ending, I don't understand how the girl got out of the house but ended up in the basement. Her point of view was not covered in the story, so we don't know what happened. It is just one of the giant holes in the story.
The only thing in the story that creeped me out were the beetles that were everywhere.

I gave this story a five because it was pretty scary and had a good story line. Even though it was in bad need of editing as with many I read. It had many errors in typing. It was a little too drawn out to the point where I kept thinking, "Get on with it!" An example of this is when James returns to the house because he feels guilty and worried about Rachel for leaving her there alone, I kept asking how many times is he going to keep calling and looking for her until it hits him that she's either not answering because she's mad at him, she's dead or just not there. I think there are at least three pages devoted to him looking for her. I did like the twist at the end though about James' fate.

Right as the story begins to climax I found myself pausing while reading to say things like "Wait, when did that get lost?" , only to read back and find that it hadn't, or else saying " This isn't possible, why on earth would the character think this?"
